At the allergist's office

Doctor: (studies chart) You have a dog, right?

Liz: Yes.

Doctor: Is he allowed in the bedroom?

Liz: Um, you could say that.

Doctor: (raises one eyebrow)

Liz: (miserably) Okay, he sleeps on our bed.

Doctor: (raises other eyebrow)

Liz: At the end of the bed. Not, like, under the covers.

Doctor: You might want to re-think that.

Liz: My sensitivity to dogs isn't as high as for the pollens and molds, though, right?

Doctor: (shows me the numbers)

Liz: Oh.

Doctor: Overall you're managing your symptoms pretty well now, but it would be a good idea to keep the dog out of the bed.

Liz: So I'm allergic to dogs and my husband is allergic to cats. What are we supposed to have? Fish?

Doctor: Or children.

If the doc really said that, he/she should be smacked. And you can tell them I said that! :P

Are you going to let him sleep in the bed anyway? Animal allergies are so hard. If D & I didn't have them, I'd get 80 pets ;

Suzy- She was only joking. It made me laugh. I actually like her a lot and think she's an excellent doctor.

B- I'm thinking I'll defy the doc on this issue. She gave me some good reasons to comply, but my allergies are so much better than they used to be- I'm willing to sniffle a little if it means Alex can sleep on our bed.

And despite the proof, I really believe that I'm not that allergic to Alex. I'm pretty sure I'll have dogs for the rest of my life.

(Denial- such a useful defense mechanism!)

(hey- let's see how many comments Liz can make on her own blog!)

Just wanted to add, Suzy, that I do appreciate your leaping to my defense. Next time someone rudely inquires about my childless state, I'll imagine you busting out some kung-fu, and I will smile.

Denial can be a wonderful thing!

Poor Alex. :( Did you show your allergist a pic of him? Maybe she'd change her mind.

are you sure it's not the husband you are allergic to?!?!

Rox- I did tell her Alex is very cute, but she didn't seem convinced...

nejyerf- I think that's the one thing they didn't test for. I'll make a note for the next appointment...

Liz, I did do kickboxing one summer in college, and the instructor said I had a great hook! So you can somehow imagine that and smile. Or just laugh at the thought of me kickboxing. lol

Maybe a desert tortoise would be better for you. How about a 60+ year old one that answers to the name Bert? He even fetches! He is also the profile photo on my blogger site!

He crawled (fell!) under our house and was stuck there for 3 years until a Verizon phone guy found and rescued him! Apparently he just hibernated for the whole 3 years! (The tortoise, not the phone guy)

Your blog ALWAYS makes me laugh - in good way - and with you (not at you; which is a big distinction - just ask my temperamental daughter!)

Hey, we can justify anything to ourselves - I'm also an expert at it.

And as to your kitchen (of last post) I can have dust laying thick throughout the whole house and piles of unfolded laundry etc etc - but my kitchen has got to be pristine. I don't let our cleaners anywhere near it ha ha!

kj- shelter dogs have a deeper appreciation of love and loyalty, don't you think?

Serious- that is amazing! Poor Bert!

nutmeg- the fun thing about dust is that you can draw pictures in it. :)

My sister lets her 2 dogs sleep in the bed. One even HAS to sleep under the covers.

And her husband's allergic.

Who do you think she loves more?

as long as we are discussing marcel....somewhere in the middle of the last season, his hair got out of control and i suddenly realized the he bore an uncanny resemblance to the heat miser......

You are so right, but I think I prefer Heat Miser's personality.

um, there's no delicate way to put this but my mom was , ahem, allergic to my dad - um, if you know what i mean. but they still managed to have three children.

so i see no reason why alex should not sleep on your bed : )

I'd rather have fish than children, at least at the moment.
